- Reading Goals:
- Comprehension: Students should be able to draw conclusions, make inferences, and support their reasoning with evidence from the text. Key skills include identifying main ideas and supporting details, summarizing and sequencing events, understanding text structures, determining author’s purpose and point of view, comparing and contrasting elements across texts, and making connections within and between texts, including multimedia.
- Vocabulary: Students should use context clues and word patterns (root words, prefixes, suffixes) to understand unfamiliar words and phrases. They should also be able to interpret figurative language.
- Fluency: Students should read with appropriate speed, pacing, and expression.

- Writing Process: Students should understand the writing process, including planning and organizing ideas, drafting with a clear main idea and supporting details, revising and editing for clarity and conventions, and using technology to publish their work.
- Text Types: Students should be able to write different types of texts, including opinion essays with supporting reasons, informative/explanatory texts with organized information, and narratives with developed characters, settings, and events.
- Grammar and Conventions: Students should use correct sentence structure, including compound sentences, verb tense, appropriate word choice, punctuation and capitalization, and spelling patterns.
- Research: Students should be able to gather information from various sources, evaluate its accuracy, and present their findings.
