- Level 1 R&W 2-4: This class is designed to build foundational reading and writing skills, which includes developing reading fluency, comprehension strategies, and writing various text types with increasing complexity and accuracy.
- Level 2 R&W 5-6: This course is designed to develop your student’s strong reading comprehension, writing skills, and vocabulary. Students learn to analyze text, identify themes and perspectives, and use evidence to support their understanding. Writing skills include crafting narratives, informative pieces, and persuasive arguments. They also refine their grammar, mechanics, and ability to choose precise language.
- Level 3 R & W 7-8: This course is designed to develop students’ ability to engage with increasingly complex texts and produce clear, coherent, and well-supported writing for a variety of purposes and audiences.
- Level 4 R & W 9-11: This course is designed to help students build a strong foundation for college and career readiness. They will: deepen their understanding of complex texts (learning to read and analyze challenging literary and informational texts from various genres and disciplines); develop analytical and argumentative writing skills (learning to express opinions, support claims with evidence from texts, and write for different purposes and audiences.

The following R & W courses are designed for students to refine their writing for writing competitions. Entering writing competitions allow writers to practice and refine their writing skills, including crafting narratives, developing characters, improving grammar, and expanding vocabulary. Participants learn to write for a specific audience, even if it’s an unknown group of judges or readers. Writing contests often involve deadlines and specific requirements, which help writers develop skills in goal setting, time management, and self-discipline.
Many competitions offer feedback or critiques, which can help writers identify their strengths and weaknesses and improve their craft. Competitions can connect writers with other writers, mentors, editors, and publishers, fostering a sense of community and potentially leading to future opportunities.

ADVANCED READING (Instructor: Dr. Belle Hostutler)
Course Description: This course is designed to support your student’s success in ELA literacy, reading, and writing. It also expands your student’s vocabulary, enhances your student’s reading proficiency, and cultivate your student’s other skills such as literary analysis and writing.

DIGITAL SAT READING & WRITING (Instructor: Dr. Belle Hostutler)
Course Description: This course provides students with structured learning and expert guidance to help them improve their skills and knowledge for the SAT exam. In this class, students are encouraged to maintain a regular studying schedule on reading, grammar, vocabulary, and writing techniques. The instructor and peers provide support and encouragement, minimizing procrastination that often happens to individual studying. Your student will be provided with a structured learning environment in which they learn about the SAT Reading and Writing structure, question types, and timing. Regular practice tests simulate exam conditions, building confidence and reducing anxiety.
